Washington State Legislature passed the following bills during the 2024 Session that go into effect on June 6, 2024.  

  • SB 6109: Requires courts to give great weight to the lethality of high-potency synthetic opioids and public health guidance from the DOH related to high-potency synthetic opioids; funding for new services and programs.
  • SB 5908: Changes the requirements for the Extended Foster Care Program.

The Department of Health’s (DOH’s) Public Health Guidance on High-Potency Synthetic Opioids: Considerations in Assessing Child Safety (preliminary) will be available for download on DOH’s website, starting June 6th, using the following link: https://doh.wa.gov/community-and-environment/opioids/fentanyl-exposure-public-places. SB 6109 requires that “the court shall give great weight to the lethality of high-potency synthetic opioids and public health guidance from the department of health related to high-potency synthetic opioids, including fentanyl…” when making removal and placement decisions. The DOH has been working diligently with system partners to create this guidance. The DOH expects the guidance will change over time, as they continue to learn more about the impacts of high potency synthetic opioids on children and families.
