Keeping Families Together Act: Basics for the Bench

August 10, 2023 @ 8:00 am - August 11, 2023 @ 12:30 pm

The Washington State Legislature passed the Keeping Families Together Act (HB 1227) in 2021, with an effective date of July 1, 2023. This historic legislation makes significant changes to the front-end of the dependency court process and represents a fundamental shift in how courts consider child safety in decision-making. In May, Family & Youth Justice Programs (FYJP) held the 2023 Dependency Judicial Training Academy which was entirely focused on preparing courts for these monumental changes. The academy was very well-received and, in response to numerous requests for additional training, we are offering a condensed, 1.5-day version of the academy in August 2023.

This training will cover the new law and impacts of statutory changes on judicial officer practice and court process. Attendees will also be introduced to the variety of tools, resources and trainings designed to support courts in successful implementation. This training will be recorded and made available for later viewing.

Some of the topics covered in this training will include:

  • Purpose & Intent of HB 1227
  • Overview of Statutory Changes
  • iDecide (popular web-based application developed to support implementation)
  • New Legal Standard: Imminent Physical Harm
  • Harm of Removal and Balancing Child Safety
  • Safety Planning
  • Importance of Kinship Care
